How is Well-Being Measured?

Well-Being Scale

For each county, the six dimensions of well-being—Health, Community, Environment, Financial, Learning & Development, and Family & Household—receive a score of either "Getting Started," "Strengthening," or "Excelling." This score on the Well-Being Scale is based on publicly available data of indicators. Learn more about the data, indicators, and methodology.

What Will You Find Here?

When you click on one of the six dimensions of well-being, you'll find an overall Well-Being Score for the county and a data dashboard of indicators contributing to child and family well-being. You'll also learn about example initiatives from across the state and ideas for action steps you can take to strengthen well-being in your community.

Well-Being Scale

Our research focuses on six key dimensions that are vital for children's well-being: Family, Community, Environment, Health, Education, and Financial. Within each of these areas, we examine various indicators that affect children's lives. Getting Started

The county is in the early stages of addressing the needs of children and families with significant gaps in resources and support, a need for greater infrastructure, and community collaborations.

Strengthening

The county is making good progress but still has room for improvement with a solid foundation. Some areas may require further development to ensure consistent access to services and improved well-being outcomes.

Excelling

The county is meeting the needs of children and families. The county demonstrates strong outcomes in key well-being indicators, with minimal gaps or barriers.

Communities excel when their residents are physically and mentally healthy. They ensure reliable and affordable access to healthcare and education that promotes healthy habits, prevention, and healing. 
Environment
Environment
Communities excel when their spaces and places promote health, safety, and opportunity, for example, walkable neighborhoods, clean drinking water, dependable crisis response, and reliable access to food, parks, and public spaces.
Financial
Financial
Communities excel when families experience economic security and opportunity. They ensure residents have ample access to employment opportunities that align with skillsets, affordable housing, and child care.
Learning and Development
Learning and Development
Communities excel when all members have access to learning experiences that contribute to cognitive growth at every age and stage, for example, screenings, early interventions, and services that positively shape academic achievement.
Family and Household
Family and Household
Communities excel when their residents experience supportive, secure, and nurturing relationships by, for example, investing in supports for coping with stressors, enhancing dynamics between caregivers and children, and fostering resilience.
